It is, perhaps, the most elegant and luxurious member of the Volvo lineup. And it is about to get even better for Glendale and Peoria drivers. Volvo is taking a step into the future with its new Recharge initiative; Volvo's goal to have 50 percent of its vehicles all-electric by 2025. And starting in the 2022 model year, you can find the Volvo XC90 available as an electric model at Volvo Cars of Phoenix. The American-built XC90 follows hot on the heels of the unveiling of the XC40 Recharge, later this year.

What can you expect when Volvo's top luxury crossover goes electric? A lot of the excellent features you see now. The only change will be the powertrain. Gone will be 250-horsepower T5 and 316-horsepower T6 options. Instead, you can choose between the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), a twin-engine Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and a 48-volt mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV). Based on the T8 Plug-in Hybrid powertrain and refined Polestar Engineered trim levels, the new generation of XC90 crossovers will be equally powerful and efficient.

There is no need to wonder if the next version of the XC90 will lose any power when it goes through its electrical overhaul. If the T8 Polestar Engineered is any indication, Scottsdale drivers will more than likely notice quite a boost when it comes to the horsepower. The plug-in hybrid T8 takes the engine of the T6 lineup and cranks up the power to 400 horses. The EPA-estimates a range of 55 MPGe for the all-wheel-drive SUV.

So, what is the difference between the three different models of electric vehicles?

  • Hybrid: Combines a combustion, or fuel-powered, engine with an electrical motor and a rechargeable battery.
  • Plug-in hybrid: A version of the hybrid engine that can be plugged in to help recharge and reduces the need for the gasoline engine.
  • Mild Hybrid: An electric engine helps support the combustion engine to reduce emissions

There should be no drop-off in quality, performance or style in the 2022 Electric versions of the XC90. It is, after all, still a Volvo. Expect a smooth and economical drive around the Phoenix-area and start saving money and preserving air quality, in the new electric lineup of XC90 models.
